Tips to Help Your Child Crack the Test:

What can parents do to help their children on important tests? Expert educators in the Cincinnati Public School District offer these suggestions:

· Keep track of your child's progress all year long. The Ohio Proficiency Tests are right in line with the district's curriculum. So, while students can't really "cram" for these tests, if they pay attention in class, perform well on their daily assignments and complete their homework, they should also do well on the Proficiency Tests. Parents can help by monitoring homework and being aware of their child's rubric scores on progress reports.

· Show your children you're interested in their education. Ask them to "teach" you what they've learned in school. Keep in touch with your child's teacher and try to attend parents' meetings at school.

· Help your child establish good study habits. Set a consistent time for your child to do homework every day. Make sure your child has a place to do homework that is quiet, comfortable and well-lighted.
· Read with your children. Reading with a parent helps children build their vocabulary and increase their comprehension. Good readers also can become good writers. Reading and writing are extremely important for success on the state's Fourth- and Sixth-Grade Proficiency Tests. Short written answers and essays count for about half of the score on these tests.

· Don't spend a lot of time "drilling" your children on schoolwork. Instead, look for fun ways to make learning part of everyday activities. Play word games while driving in the car or use shopping circulars to make up math problems. Many schools also have parent centers where parents can check out learning games and books.

· Look for and praise progress in your children's school work. Letting your children know you're proud of their accomplishments can motivate them to work even harder.
· Remind your children of the importance of reading directions carefully and not rushing through a test. Advise them to go back and check their work if they finish before time is up.

· On the night before the test, make sure your child goes to bed early enough to get a good rest. The next morning, make sure he or she eats a nutritious breakfast. Tell your child you know he or she will do his best on the test. Emphasize that a good try is better than no try at all.
